After careful consideration and gathering input from teachers, staff, and families, the Northeastern Local School District will move forward with a plan for the 2020-2021 school year that will accomodate construction work in the district and begin the process of aligning the district to the structures that will be in place in its new school facilities.
Starting this fall, South Vienna Middle School seventh and eighth grade students will attend the Northeastern 7-12 Building, along with 9-12th grade students. Preschool classrooms currently located at NEHS will move to South Vienna Elementary School and Rolling Hills Elementary School. This adjustment would allow elementary classrooms at South Vienna to move to accommodate upcoming construction on the South Vienna School site.
In addition to accommodating the facilities project, transitioning 7th and 8th grade to NEHS will begin the process of aligning the district to the grade bands that will be in place in the new PK-12 facilities. When the new facilities open, PK-6th grade will make up elementary sections and 7-12th grades will make up secondary sections.
“As we work toward completing our facilities project as quickly as possible, we will need to make some adjustments that allow construction to happen with minimal interruption and distraction for our students,” said Superintendent John Kronour. “We know that change is always hard, and we are working to make this transition as smooth as possible for our students and families. Our team has worked diligently to create plans that are safe and support learning.”
Additionally, a middle school special education unit currently located at South Vienna Middle School will move to Northridge Middle School, and a high school cross-categorical transition unit will move to Kenton Ridge High School from Northeastern High School. Grade levels at Rolling Hills, Northridge, and Kenton Ridge will not be changed.
Classrooms for 7th and 8th South Vienna grade students will move to the current math wing (formerly preschool and kindergarten classrooms) at Northeastern High School.
“One of our priorities in this process has been making sure that we preserve the middle school experience for 7th and 8th grade, as well as the high school experience for 9-12th grades,” said Northeastern High School Principal Todd Justice, who was formerly the principal of South Vienna Middle School. “We’ve worked hard to create a plan that takes into consideration a variety of factors, including lunches, restroom and hallway use, PE locker rooms, and more to make sure that all of our Jets have a positive experience at school.”
Mr. Justice will be joined at the Northeastern 7-12 Building by Mr. Zack Dobbelaere, currently the principal at South Vienna Middle School, who would serve as administrator for 7th and 8th grades. Mrs. Belinda Banks, Curriculum Director, will join South Vienna Elementary Principal Mrs. Denise Jones in administration at South Vienna Elementary.
