WELCOME

Dear Students of Northeastern High School:

Welcome back for the 2009-2010 school year.  This is the eighth edition of our school planner and is funded totally through our Renaissance program and Student Fees.  It will be a very important part of your daily life as a student at Northeastern High School this year.  In our efforts to promote excellence in achievement and behavior, this planner is a very valuable tool in helping you to accomplish these lofty goals.

This planner has been prepared as a guide to help you become aware of the policies and procedures you are expected to follow at Northeastern High School.  It is not all encompassing, but does give you a wealth of information to help you deal with the most common situations that arise at Northeastern.

As in any fine school, the students are the most important part: after all, without students, schools would not exist.  It is our intent that you have a very enriching and enjoyable experience during your years at NEHS.  To help you organize better and achieve more, this planner has been designed specifically for you by a committee comprised of students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

Our expectations for you are high, but not unreasonable or unfair.  No matter how difficult you find some of the challenges at NEHS, the future holds an even more difficult one.  If you leave NEHS well prepared, those challenges will be that much easier to meet and overcome.  Please let us help you prepare for them by using this planner effectively to improve overall school achievement.

Wishing you a wonderful year,

Parents Can Make a Difference

Homework is the key to your child’s success in school

Your children may disagree, but educators do not: homework is the key to your child’s success in school.  Critics of the American education system point to other countries whose students show a high level of achievement, and attribute that success in large measure to the many hours of homework they are assigned each night.

There are not enough hours in the school day for all of the learning and reinforcement students need to master a subject.  That’s what homework is for.  Unfortunately, many students do not see it that way.  They either give their homework assignments little attention, or they ignore them entirely.

That’s where you as parents come in.  It’s important to keep close tabs on your child’s homework assignments.  If that means contacting the school regularly, then please do it.  There are many ways that a parent can ensure that their children get the most out of their homework assignments.  Here are a few tips offered by experts to help your child to a rewarding experience:

·         Homework is best done in the same place each day.  Try to limit distractions.  Teachers discourage having a television on while a child is working on homework.

·         Keep supplies – dictionaries, paper, etc. – in a box or drawer nearby.

·         Be firm about the fact that homework is an extension of the child’s job of going to school.

·         Show the child that you are interested in the day’s homework.  Ask about long term assignments.   Too many times children forget the science project until the night before it is due.

·         Resist doing the child’s homework for him or her.  Younger children may need more help though.

·         Praise your child for the work.

·         Ask to see the grades on homework assignments.  Look at the teacher’s comments and contact the teacher if you have any questions about the assignments or the grade.

Monitoring your child’s homework is one of the best ways parents can work with the schools to improve their children’s skills.  It is our intent that this planner will make that task a bit more manageable for parent and child.

NEHS Attendance Policy

Excused Absence Family Vacation
Excessive Absence Medical Statement
Early Dismissal or Late Arrival

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance is essential if students are to receive maximum benefit from their educational experiences.  Since school is for the student, certain rules and regulations regarding attendance are necessary.  All students are expected to be in attendance every day that the school is open for instruction.  The ultimate responsibility for having the student in school rests with the parent.  A parent needs to call the school (328-6575) each day a student is absent. Any student who is absent from school MUST have a phone call made to the office within a 48 hour period of the absence.

It is preferable for the office to receive a call on the day of the absence.  If it is impossible to call, a note from the parent listing the student’s full name, date of absence, reason for absence and the parent’s signature must be sent to the school office.  Medical statements will also suffice. A student will be considered in legal attendance, or present, when he/she is attending regularly assigned classes or school sponsored activities during the school day.

EXCUSED ABSENCE

The statutes governing school attendance, which are set by the State of Ohio, are very specific and leave little option for school authorities to excuse students from school.  In accordance with the Ohio School Standards and the Northeastern Local Board of Education, only the following absences from school will be considered as legal:

1. Personal Illness

2. Critical illness in the family

3. Death of a relative

4. Quarantine of the home

5. Observance of a religious holiday (NOT INSTRUCTION)

6. Family vacation (Appropriate paperwork required)

7. College Visitation-Seniors only (Follow procedure)

8. Any other reason which the administration may deem justifiable and   with parental consent and confirmation.

FAMILY VACATION

Every effort should be made by parents or guardians to schedule vacations during the summer or when school is not in session.  All requests to be considered for legal absence shall be made in writing to the principal by the parent or guardian as early as possible.  The principal shall consider academic and attendance records when determining requests for legal absences for vacations.  A student may be required by the teacher to complete work to be missed prior to departure.

EXCESSIVE ABSENCE

A student will be considered excessively absent when the student has accumulated four (4) days of absence and these absences are NOT COVERED by medical statement / verified family vacation OR a student has accumulated more than twelve (12) absences in a school year.  The following procedure will be followed concerning excessive absences:

Attendance letters-Letters concerning possible attendance issues will be sent periodically to the student’s parents/guardian explaining the NEHS attendance policy as it complies the Ohio Revised Code Concerning School Attendance.

N.M.S. (Needs Medical Statement) At twelve absences, a letter will be mailed to the parent/guardian to notify them of  the Need of a Medical Statement to excuse further absences.  Students who continue to miss without a medical statement will  be referred to the county attendance officer or juvenile court for appropriate legal action.

Medical Statement

The medical statement must be a note, card, or letter from a competent medical authority listing the day of days that the student was deemed unable to attend school and be signed by the medical authority or his designee.

EARLY DISMISSAL OR LATE ARRIVAL

A telephone call from a parent/guardian must be made to the office (328-6575) to grant a student an early release or late arrival from school for appointments, etc.  An appointment card accompanied by a request in writing from a parent will also suffice.  Please do not request an early release unless it is absolutely unavoidable.  Students will not be permitted to leave school early because of a job.

Any student who arrives or leaves the school during the normal school hours must sign in or out in the office.  No student is to leave school or school grounds without the knowledge and consent of school officials.  If an emergency exists, see one of the secretaries and arrangements may be made to leave with administrative approval.

Students are not to call parents to pick them up unless approved by the office.  These calls will be made by the school.  Students will be warned the first time they make unauthorized calls then disciplinary action will occur.

ATTN:  SENIORS – SIGNATURES NEED TO BE REQUESTED AT LEAST ONE DAY PRIOR TO SCHEDULED VISIT.

NORTHEASTERN POLICY FOR CAMPUS VISITATION

Beginning with the second semester of their junior year, students, accompanied by a parent/guardian, are permitted to visit college campuses during the school day without being charged with an absence, provided the following conditions are met:

1.        The student picks up a parent permission slip from the Guidance Office at least 1 day before the scheduled visit.

2.        The student returns the completed permission slip to the Principal’s Office the day before the scheduled visit.

3.        The student provides confirmation of a pre-arranged conference with the college prior to the scheduled visit.

4.        Parent must accompany the student on the campus visit.

FIELD TRIPS

Permission slips must be filled out in advance.  The absence will be considered an excused absence with the student responsible for making up the work for the material missed in class the day of the field trip.
