Congratulations to NEHS Alumni Laura Schulz!
Laura Schulz, a 1990 graduate of Northeastern High School, was recently honored by the Alaska Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, receiving the annual Special Achievement Award for her “effective leadership in establishing a robust Pediatric Hematology–Oncology Program at The Children’s Hospital at Providence, so that Alaska children can receive care at home.” Dr. Schulz became the director of this program in 2005 when its only other staff member was one nurse and it functioned largely as a referral program to a Seattle hospital. Dr. Schulz now oversees multiple physicians, nurse practitioners and nurses. The program is accredited by the Children’s Oncology Group and offers a full spectrum of care including clinical trials, long term survivorship follow up, and a hematology clinic. Alaskan families no longer have to face relocation as they deal with major childhood illness. Besides Northeastern, Dr. Schulz was educated at Amherst College and Ohio State, where she earned her medical degree and completed a residency in pediatrics at Columbus Children’s Hospital. This was followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She lives in Anchorage AK with her family.
