April 8, 2011

Dear Parent / Guardian,

As you know, due to weather conditions, schools were closed nine (9) days this past winter.  Northeastern High School was closed an additional day due to a water line break for a total of ten (10) days.

Originally the state legislature had reduced the number of allowable calamity days for the 2010-2011 school year to three (3) days.  Legislation passed April 7th has reinstated two (2) additional waived calamity days for a total of five (5) days for this year.  The recent legislation also has allowed for school districts to add additional time to the remaining school days to make-up for days missed beyond the five (5) waived days.

What does this mean for the Northeastern Local School District?  We originally missed nine (9) days and have been allowed five (5) calamity days.  We are now required to make up four (4) additional days for the district and five (5) days for Northeastern High School, since they missed an additional day

We are now allowed to add additional time, in half hour increments, to our remaining scheduled days to make up missed time. It is the intent of our district to begin extending our existing schedule by ½ hour beginning on Monday, April 11, 2011 through May 26th.    This will allow the district to make up three (3) of the four (4) district days and three (3) of the five (5) days for Northeastern High school.

Therefore, we will only be extending the school calendar by one (1) additional day for the district and two (2) additional days for Northeastern High School.  The last day for all students except NEHS will be June 2nd.  The last day for Northeastern High School will be June 3rd.  High school graduation dates are unchanged.

Sincerely,
