Important Update: Extended Learning Day on Monday, January 26th
Dear NELSD Families,

You may have seen that extreme winter weather is forecasted for this weekend, which could impact school operations early next week. While we don't yet know the exact conditions we will experience, we want to be proactive and communicate early so you can plan for next week.

Monday, January 26th, will be an extended learning day (remote learning day). Students will learn from home instead of coming to school.

Why are we doing this?
We have already used the equivalent of five calamity days this year, and it is only January. The weather forecast predicts more snow and very cold temperatures this weekend into next week. By planning an extended learning day now, we can save our remaining calamity hours and avoid having to make up school days later in the year or during the summer.

What does this mean for my child?
  • Your child will bring home work on Friday to complete on Monday. Families may choose to complete the work over the weekend if that is more convenient.
  • Grades K-4: Your child will have paper packets or worksheets to complete at home.
  • Grades 5-12: Your child may have assignments through Google Classroom or other online platforms.
  • The work is meant to review what students have already learned—not teach something new.
  • Student completion of assignments will serve as attendance for the day.
  • Teachers will be available during school hours to answer questions through ParentSquare or email.
  • Students taking classes at Clark State or attending Springfield-Clark Career Technology Center (CTC): Please follow any guidance or instructions provided directly by Clark State or the CTC regarding their operations on weather-related days.

Important reminders

  • This is not meant to be stressful. The work is for learning practice, not a test or punishment.
  • If your child cannot complete the work for any reason, please let the teacher know. They will work with you to find a solution.
  • You will receive more specific information from your child's building/teacher about assignments and expectations.
  • If you do not have internet access or your child needs help, please contact your child's teacher. We want to support you.

Community Resource - Warming Shelter:
Cold temperatures are expected this weekend, and a warming shelter will be open to help keep individuals and families in need safe.

  • Location: Salvation Army, 15 S. Plum St.
  • Hours: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. when temperatures are at or below 32°F; open 24 hours during single-digit temperatures
  • Services: Dinner and breakfast provided, along with access to case management services. Separate areas are available for men, women and children.
  • Volunteers needed: To help staff the shelter, contact Aaron Roy at aaron@nehemiahfoundation.org or 937-325-6226, ext. 4.

Questions?
Please contact your child's teacher or the school office if you have questions or concerns.

We appreciate your flexibility and partnership as we work together to keep students learning while managing winter weather.

Thank you,

Jack Fisher
