District Update - Make-Up Days and Virtual Learning Days

Dear NELSD Families,

February has certainly been a month for winter weather! As we continue to follow our school calendar and agreements regarding snow days, I wanted to take a moment to update families about make-up days and what to expect if we have additional snow days.

As a reminder, four of our schools - South Vienna Elementary, Northridge Elementary and Middle School, Kenton Ridge High School, and Northeastern Middle and High School - have had seven snow days as of today, February 18, 2021. Rolling Hills Elementary has had six snow days as of today, because of a period of virtual learning in December.

Our school calendar designates make-up days in the event that we have six or more snow days during a school year. All in-person learning students will attend school on Friday, March 5, 2021, to make up a snow day. This includes Rolling Hills Elementary.

In-person learning students who attend Northeastern Middle and High School, South Vienna Elementary, Kenton Ridge High School, and Northridge Elementary and Middle School will also attend school on Monday, April 5, 2021. This does not include Rolling Hills Elementary at this time, however, Rolling Hills students may have to attend school on April 5 if we have another Snow Day.

If we have additional snow days this school year, we will have a Virtual Learning Day for students at South Vienna Elementary, Northeastern Middle and High School, Kenton Ridge High School, and Northridge Elementary and Middle School. If we have two or more additional snow days, Rolling Hills students would join virtual learning on the second snow day.

I know this can be confusing and we will clearly communicate to families which schools are impacted by Make-Up Days and Virtual Learning Days as we move through the rest of winter. To recap:

  • If your student attends Kenton Ridge High School, Northeastern Middle and High School, South Vienna Elementary or Northridge Elementary and Middle School:

    • They will attend school on Friday, March 5 (Make-Up Day)

    • They will attend school on Monday, April 5 (Make-Up Day)

    • They will have a Virtual Learning Day if we have any additional snow days

  • If your student attends Rolling Hills Elementary:

    • They will attend school on Friday, March 5 (Make-Up Day)

    • As of today, Rolling Hills students will not attend on Monday, April 5, 2021. If we have another snow day, they will attend on Monday, April 5 for a Make-Up Day.

    • If we have two more Snow Days, they will participate in Virtual Learning Days.

We will continue to make our weather delay and cancellation calls with the safety of our students and staff at the forefront of our decision-making and will keep you updated about any additional changes to the calendar.

Thank you,

Dr. John Kronour

Superintendent
